Prague.jpgR and I went to Prague for Easter 2015. At some point, likely as a pre-teen watching quasi romcoms, I had seen a film that spent a large part of the story in Prague. I don’t remember anything else about the film, but from then on it was one of the top five places I wanted to visit. Funny how a piece of media crossing your path at the right time can influence you so much.

R’s cousin had recently been, and his parents had a guide book, and that was all it took to convince him! The Easter Break ended up being only a week after I finished nannying, so in a lot of ways I consider that break the beginning of a new ‘stage’ of sorts of my life in London. Easter in 2015 was late April, so still chilly but not the depths of winter any more.

Prague was delightful. The ‘Old Town’ – which is the historic part of the city – is beautiful, it’s all dark stone, cobbles and little alleyways filled with shops. We ate a lot of amazing little cakes and pastries that I could never recreate – my favourite was called Misa Dortik, which is a cross between a cheesecake and feta cheese. Delicious.

Prauge.jpgThere’s a fantastic wide stone footbridge – The Charles Bridge – over the river Vltava with amazing statues all the way across. The river curves up and around the centre city, and on the other side is the government buildings, a massive park leading up a hill and the castle. Prague Castle goes up the side of a hill, and is a literal village inside walls. It’s exactly what you would expect a city castle from a fairytale set in the 18th century to be. If you’re me that is!

The highlight of the trip, for me, was the snow. It snowed on and off but mostly on on our last day. It didn’t settle, but it looked beautiful coming down, and I come from a city where it doesn’t snow so I loved it.

There’s a puppy on the train I’m riding home, so I’m going to end it here, but if you are looking for a weekend break that’s a little out the way, Prague is just the ticket!
